Firm Foundations for Learning

All learning relies on how we perceive the world and how we process what we perceive.

How we perceive the world depends on how well organized our sensory systems are.

For example, you may have good eyesight but find that the print moves or becomes blurry. You may hear quite well but often miss some of what someone (e.g., teacher) says to you.

If the information coming into your brain is confused, even the best ability to process is going to end up with learning difficulties.

When the information coming in is clear, it is easier to deal with. This allows teaching and learning to be effective and even enjoyable.

Getting ready to learn by putting in a firm foundation is the process of developing the abilities you need to perceive and process what you need to learn.

Our Neurodevelopmental and Educational Program, Firm Foundations for Learning, has three main components:

A neurodevelopmental program

To understand what gets in the way, why, and how to make it easier. The initial program is for 6 months. Using movement-based activities, sensory and organizational issues are addressed in an individualized home program delivered by meeting online.

Courses

We offer 10-12 hours of training for parents, caregivers and other support people in short units of 1-2 hours at a time, to help you understand your child, and prepare you to support and assist your child through the Neurodevelopmental Program.

Specialist Tutoring

Three sessions focused on how to learn and express yourself more effectively. These are tailored to the thinking and processing styles of the individual.
