“Can’t you teach your child to stop being so rude!?”

As you know all too well, your child with autism can be a handful. They can’t seem to understand how to interact with others like a ‘normal person’ and their public meltdowns are hard to deal with.

Other parents judge you without understanding what you’re dealing with.

You’ve followed the traditional, well-intentioned advice for improving their social behavior by teaching them a lot of social rules.

Which makes sense...

...to people who don’t understand what’s actually going on for someone with autism.

Your child is just as frustrated as you are. Nobody seems to understand them. They are fighting to figure out how to “be normal”, but it just doesn’t work like that.

It can be heartbreaking to watch; they find social situations stressful and confusing.

But it’s not your fault - you’ve been doing all you can to help them.

Sure, they can learn social rules to help them survive, but that’s far from a complete solution. It’s patchwork - it helps them function but it doesn’t help them thrive.

Here’s the reality...

Dealing with people in unpredictable social situations is challenging for them, and the stress of public places or new environments may even trigger meltdowns.

They not only need to figure out social rules and how to apply them. They also need to learn to deal with the overload of interacting with new people and unfamiliar situations in ways that allow them to still think and communicate effectively.

The only way to achieve this is to get personal guidance from a specialist autism tutor who actually understands autism, how to manage it, and most importantly, how to work with your child to develop rules to fit in to society while allowing them to enhance their ability to think and communicate effectively.

It’s not that they are socially incompetent or that you have not raised them right. It’s that you’ve been trying to follow the advice of “experts” who tell you to teach your child social rules, instead of showing them how they learn.

For those with autism, there are specific secrets to succeeding in school... and in life.

Think about it. Autism is a genetic trait that has evolved over millions of years and appears everywhere around the world. So it must have an evolutionary advantage, or it would have died out. You just need to help your child learn what that evolutionary advantage is and how to use it to their benefit.

Many of the things you’ve been told are wrong:

  • They have probably been told to ‘just ignore’ irritating sounds, smells and even lighting to fit in. But that takes a lot of brain power and it’s exhausting for a person with autism.
  • A better solution is to encourage them to manage their environment to remove those distractions… so they can focus on what is really important.
  • They have probably been told that to make friends they have to follow social rules. This is true, but it’s only part of the story.
  • They also need to understand the interplay of their style with other people’s approaches and develop social rules that actually allow them to make friends.
  • Perhaps the biggest myth of all is that autism is a disability. People tend to miss their ability to see patterns and solutions to problems in ways that other people just cannot.
  • The challenge your child faces is to learn to communicate their insights effectively.

Getting advice from people who don’t deeply understand autism is like bringing an airplane to a car mechanic. They aren’t going to know what to do with it, so they’ll change the oil and send you on your way.

Our specialist autism tutors are the airplane mechanics. We understand how your child really learns, so we can show them how to turn what others consider a disability into a superpower.

We aren’t here to teach math, chemistry, or any specific subject. We’re here to teach your child how they learn - and to adapt with them as they progress through school and their courses get progressively more difficult.

Once they learn to manage their environment and stresses, they will not just keep up with their classmates, but excel. As you both start to see the improvement, the tension in your family will dissolve and be replaced by hope, understanding... and achievement.

For their entire life you’ve been told that their autism is a problem. Our specialist autism tutors will show them how to bring out their best and turn their autism into a superpower.
